RAPTORS ARE THE SOLUTION

The Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society will have as their special speakers Kandie Cansler and Leslie Triplett, who will be speaking Thursday February 20, 2025 at the Church of the Nazarene at 7:00 pm. They will be presenting on “Raptors are the Solution – Rodent Control the Safe Way.”
The Birders will bring several owls and babies to show the problems with tree trimmers.
They receive many birds that are orphaned because of tree trimming practices. Thanks to social media, the community at large has become more aware of the hazards of trimming trees at the wrong time of year. The best way is to educate them as to what they are doing is NOT the best time to trim trees – during breeding season. Many of the nestlings are too badly injured and the success rate is not the best. It is a struggle every year and public education is the best hope to change things.
“Redlands is a city full of beautiful trees and that means it is also a city with an abundance of beautiful birds and if we all work together….both can thrive”, said Kandie Cansler. They will be bringing a sample of barn owl boxes and handouts to clarify how and why this works. They will have many photos on display for everyone to look at and they will answer questions on any wildlife subject you would like. If you have any other questions let them know at Bear Paw Ranch Wildlife Rehabilitation is located at 37687 Oak Glen Road in Oak Glen. They are licensed with both the State and Federal Government.
Kandie began wildlife rehabilitation in 1982 when the local game warden came to visit her husband and asked if she was interested in rehabilitating a red tailed hawk….been at it ever since. She specializes in raptors (hawks & owls). She has been a Member of the California Council for Wildlife Rehabilitators (CCWR) since it was created approximately 20 years ago. She is Licensed with California Fish & Wildlife and Federal Fish & Wildlife and is required to attend wildlife educational seminars at least once a year in order to maintain her licensing status. On many occasions she has gone to schools to present educational programs to children so they understand the value of our precious wildlife. She works closely with the rehabilitation departments of The Alpine Zoo in Big Bear, The Living Desert in Palm Desert & The Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center in Indio. In the spring & early summer, any spare time is spent answering wildlife calls & rehabilitating as many as possible. Time is also dedicated to educating the public on how best to co-exist with the wildlife that we all share our beautiful surroundings with. Our local veterinarians, animal control officers & shelters often call for their assistance when dealing with the public & wildlife interactions.
Several years ago, she worked in conjunction with the City of Yucaipa & Sherri Laffey, formerly of YAPS, to designate the wildlife corridors within their City and formulate a Wildlife Corridor Plan. This resulted in Wildlife Corridor Signs being placed in strategic locations within the City to help the public in their awareness of their surroundings. The signage is still in place today.
Leslie Triplett has been active in wildlife rehab for many years and at this time is operating Pond Digger Ranch Wildlife
Rehabilitation under the State and Federal licenses of Bear Paw Ranch Wildlife Rehabilitation. Leslie specializes in raccoons, skunks, possums, foxes, bobcats, squirrels, crows, ravens and songbirds. She saves as many critters as POSSIBLE. She operates as a 501C3 so donations can be deducted and are very much appreciated.
Leslie is a well-known personality in the Redlands area because she was the owner of Daryl’s Pet Shop for many years. She and her husband Eric now own and operate “The Pond Digger” in Cherry Valley creating and servicing beautiful ponds for communities far and wide.
So I hope this will inspire you to come and enjoy her presentation on “Raptors are the Solution – Rodent Control the Safe Way” Thursday February 20, 2025 at the Church of the Nazarene, 1307 E. Citrus Avenue in Redlands.
